«No matter how many times they lock me up or threaten me, they won't stop me» - Zara Alvarez
On 17 August 2020, Zara Alvarez was brutally murdered because of her commitment to her community.
Zara was a health and human rights activist. She was coordinator of the Karapatan local department on the island of Negros in the Philippines. In addition to her commitment to human rights, she was also a member of the Board of Directors of our partner, the Council for Health and Development, a national umbrella organisation for basic health programmes, where she defended the Filipino people's right to health.
In November 2019, we had a fascinating interview with Zara about her commitment to the Filipino people and the fight for the right to health and social justice. A fight she has not given up despite the intimidation, arrests and death threats she has received.
We are continuing Zara's fight for the right to health and social justice.
