On 17 August 2020, Zara Alvarez was brutally murdered for her commitment to her community.

Zara was a health and human rights activist. She was coordinator of the local department of Karapatan in the Philippines on the island of Negros. In addition to her commitment to human rights, she was also a board member of our partner Council for Health and Development, a national umbrella of community-based health programmes, where she defended the right to health of the Filipino people.

In November 2019, we had a gripping interview with Zara about her commitment to the Filipino people and the struggle for the right to health and social justice. A struggle she did not give up despite the intimidations, arrests and death threats she received.

We will continue Zara’s fight for the right to health and social justice.
